The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is one of the premier medical colleges in India. It is located in the city of Pune, Maharashtra. The college is managed by the Indian Armed Forces.
The Armed Forces Medical College was formed in 1948 by the amalgamation of Army Medical Training Centre, the Army School of Hygiene, the Central Military Pathology Laboratory, the School of Blood Transfusion and Army School of Radiology. The college initially began as postgraduate training and research center. Later the graduate wing (MBBS education) was added in 1962. The graduate wing is affiliated to the University of Pune and is recognized by the Medical Council of India for conducting 4 years and 6 months teaching programme (followed by one year internship) leading to MBBS degree. All the MBBS graduates from AFMC are liable to serve in the medical services of the Armed Forces.
The college is fully residential with separate hostels for boys and girls. Residence in the hostels is mandatory for all the cadets for the entire duration of the course. AFMC is the only medical college in Asia where all expenses are paid by the Government. Students receive free tuition, free lodging and boarding, uniforms, book subsidies and an allowance for upkeep of the uniforms. There are extensive facilities for sports, and other activities for a well balanced non-academic exposure.
