The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE) is considered as the toughest engineering entrance examinations in the world with a success rate of around 1:83.
All seven IITs (Kharagpur, Kanpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Guwahati, and Roorkee) and IT-BHU Varanasi, and ISM Dhanbad use the JEE rank as the sole criteria for admitting students for various engineering programs. All these institutions are known for providing quality education in science and technology and for research in frontier areas.
Some other institutions like Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Kolkata, Pune & Mohali and Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST) also admit students through the JEE rank (Extended Merit List). (Check EML for details)
The JEE is conducted annually by various IITs by a policy of rotation. The exam pattern of IIT JEE is known to be modified every few years. (Check exam patterns and syllabus for details)
The academic session in the two new IITs (IIT Indore and IIT Himachal Pradesh) will commence from the academic year 2009-2010 with a total of 120 seats in each of them. The admissions will be through JEE-2009.
