The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE) is considered as the toughest engineering entrance examinations in the world with a success rate of around 1:83.
All seven IITs (Kharagpur, Kanpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Guwahati, and Roorkee) and IT-BHU Varanasi, and ISM Dhanbad use the JEE rank as the sole criteria for admitting students for various engineering programs. All these institutions are known for providing quality education in science and technology and for research in frontier areas.
Some other institutions like Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) at Kolkata, Pune & Mohali and Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST) also admit students through the JEE rank (Extended Merit List). (Check EML for details)

Starting from 2007, a candidate can attempt JEE for nor more than two times. The number of students taking this examination has increased substantially each year with the JEE-2006 registering about 300,000 candidates.
